USS Yorktown Sleepover
December 8-9, 2014
Registration Deadline: October 30

What we're doing...
Join us for a sleepover on the USS Yorktown, the historic WWII aircraft carrier near Charleston, SC!

We'll get a special tour of the USS Yorktown, and have time to explore a destroyer and submarine, a replica of a Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp, and historic Fort Sumter. We'll eat our meals (lunch and dinner on Monday, and breakfast on Tuesday) in the mess hall, and spend the night in the ship's berths, like the sailors did when the ship was in service.

Plan to meet at Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant, SC, at 8:30 am on Monday, December 8. We must be out of the berths by 9:00 am on Tuesday morning, but you can continue to tour the ships and aircraft as long as you wish that day.

Carolina Homeschooler members will have priority when registering for this event. I'll keep a waiting list and will add non-members if space is available. See our membership area for more information about becoming a member.

Cost and what's included...
The cost is $75 per person for members (ages 4 and up). This covers all our scheduled tours and activities listed above, lunch and dinner on Monday, and breakfast on Tuesday. A $5 parking fee per vehicle is separate and payable when you arrive.

Non-members will be added on a space-available basis at $95 per person.

Hotel (if needed)...
If you don't want to sleep on the ship, or are unable to due to age or gender issues, we have rooms reserved for our group at a nearby hotel. You'll be able to attend all activities with us until it's time to sleep, so you won't be missing anything if you stay at the hotel.

Our rooms are suites with two queen beds and a sofa-bed (most comfortable for children), microwave, mini-refrigerator, complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and free parking.

The rate is $101.24 per night, including tax. This rate is good for the day before and the day after our event (and probably longer). If you'd like to at the hotel, please note it on your registration form and I'll email more information.

Important things to know...

Children under age 6 can participate in all the activities during the day, but can't sleep on the ship. (A work-around for this is to reserve a hotel room nearby and one parent spend the night with underage children when it's time for lights-out each night.)

Unfortunately, this ship is not accessible for the handicapped for overnight stays. It's not really accessible for those with leg or foot injuries, either (there's a lot of climbing stairs and ladders involved while touring the ships).

Males and females will sleep in separate areas on the ship. There are no exceptions to this. If you're the only parent attending with your children, and any of them are not the same gender, please arrange for a same-gender grandparent, aunt, uncle, or family friend to attend with you so they can sleep with the children in the other berth overnight. All children must be accompanied by an adult in the berths. (A work-around for this is to reserve a hotel room nearby where all of you can sleep together, but still participate in the programs during the day.)

Berthing quarters are heated and air-conditioned, and also have nearby shower facilities. You'll sleep on bunks, with little privacy, just as the sailors slept, and will need to bring your own pillows, sleeping bags (or blanket/sheet), and personal toiletries. The females will stay in the junior officer's berths, which will result in relatively more room and privacy than where the males will stay. However, think of this as a "camping" environment, not a hotel. (For families who've camped overnight at museums and aquariums with my group and slept on the floor, this will be a step up from the hard floor.)

Please also read the Important Notes section on the right before registering. It includes more information you need to know.

Cancellation policy and refunds...
Payment is refundable only if I have a family on my waiting list to replace you, and a $25 per person cancellation fee will be deducted from all refunds. No replacements, roster changes, or refunds will be made after October 30.

Your signed waiver and payment acknowledges that you understand and agree with my cancellation and refund policy.

This event may be cancelled if we don't have enough participants to meet the minimum required. If it's cancelled, you'll receive a full refund.

Want to go?
Full payment is due within 7 days of the date I confirm your registration. (I'll send you a confirmation email with payment instructions.)

After you complete the registration form, you'll receive an automated notification that it posted correctly. This email does not confirm your space on this trip - it just confirms that your registration went through correctly. Please email me if you have any questions or don't receive your automated email within 30 minutes of registering.

(I use the same registration form for many of my trips and events. Please make sure you choose the correct event on the form and complete all required fields.)

Important Notes
This sleepover will be confirmed as soon as we reach our minimum.

Your payment is due within 7 days of my registration confirmation email. Please don't register until you can make full payment.

I accept checks, bank checks, and BillPay through your bank. I can't accept PayPal or credit cards (credit card checks are fine).

Homeschoolers in other states (and Canada, and beyond) are welcome to join us.

We must check in as a group, so plan to arrive by 8:30 am at the latest so we'll be able to attend orientation together.

A mandatory fire drill will be held during the evening. If you miss this, you won't able to sleep on the ship. Please make sure you attend this with the group.

No carry-on food or drinks are allowed. If you have food allergies or special needs, they'll make exceptions, so note them on your registration form. The cost will remain the same, whether you eat their food or bring your own. A small refrigerator and microwave are available, but non-perishable foods are recommended.

Each person must bring a sleeping bag, pillow, and all other necessary personal items.

I recommend packing light. We'll have to carry our gear down a 600-foot pier to the Yorktown and haul it up ship's stairs/ladders to get to the berthing areas. I strongly recommend a backpack instead of regular or wheeled luggage since you'll be carrying your things up multiple stairs/ladders.

Plan to let children sleep on the lower bunks. The floor is made of steel and it'll hurt if they fall off the bunks during the night.

I don't recommend this trip for young children, especially those who still need strollers (there are a lot of stairs/ladders throughout each ship).

Refunds are not guaranteed. Please read my payment and refund policy carefully before you register and mail payment.
