Hello to everyone down there in the sunny state of SC
:cool2: . By the grace of God, my husband, 9 yo son and I will be joining you sometime during the first week of June, the success of our 3,000 mile cross country journey will determine just when we arrive! We leave here the 25th of May.

We have two grown children, both married, both each have two sons and both are Air Force. One in Germany and one in Alaska. Sadly, they were not home educated. We have learned our lesson.

We call our litte guy our "retirement bonus". He was born 2 years after my husband retired from the Navy!

We have bought a home in the Hopkins area and are eager to meet some folks nearby and to get connected with field trips, gatherings and such.

Some of our favorite activities up in these parts have been Royal Rangers, swimming, piano lessons, spanish lessons, gymnastics, and soccer (not all at the same time mind you).

Additionally, we will be searching for a German Shepard puppy and a gentle riding horse prompty upon our arrival.

If anyone out there can offer me some direction with any of these items, I will be ever so grateful!

Thank you for enduring my long post, I am so very excited about this move and my fingers just seem to ramble on!

Sincerely,
Gaylene:wave:

Welcome to SC. Sorry, I am not familiar with Hopkins.

You maybe able to locate a puppy at Petfinder.com, you can search shelters in South Carolina.

Have a safe trip!

Gaylene, welcome to SC and to homeschooling! :smile2:

I'm not familiar with the area you're moving to. What county will you be in?

Hello Diana and thank you for your warm welcome.

Our home in Hopkins is located in Richland county, just a few miles south of Ft. Jackson and about 26 miles west of Sumpter. The actual "town" of Hopkins, which I believe is not much more than a post office and a school, is actually 6 miles further south of where our home is.

Two weeks ago was my very first visit to SC and we had a wonderfully patient real estate agent. At my insistance, he covered just about every county surrounding Lake Murray, yet, we ended up not buying near the lake after all!

I am so pleased with the property and hope to be able to offer a home school "farm animals 101" class next spring. I've had some great training with a mentor up in WA and the children learn so much. We are traveling with my sons eight 4-H chickens to start the farm with! Ought to be a very interesting journey indeed!!

Will keep you posted! Thanks again! Gaylene

Gaylene, your Farm Animals 101 class sounds interesting! There are a lot of homeschoolers in your general area, so I don't think you'll have a problem finding others. Go to my support groups page at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/support.htm and click on the Midlands link.

Definitely keep us updated! We're glad to have you with us. :smile2:

Gaylene,

You and your family may also enjoy going to Swan Lake in Sumter. I believe the end of May they have an Iris Festival when all the irises are in bloom. I found their website once by just doing a search for Swan Lake, Sumter, SC.

Welcome to SC. You blessed my heart as I too have a retirement baby. I believe that Sarah had her baby in her old age just as an encouragement to me. I am not old enough to retire, just have kids 21 years- 9 months.
I believe the SC homeschool convention will be in your area also. I may be wrong so research it.
I am on the other end of the state, but love your willingness to jump in and have a class.
