Hi,there!
I recently moved to South Carolina. (Military move) I did my first year of homeschooling in Virginia. This past year would of been my second. I didn't have time to have my daughter assessed for her second grade year. I need to have her passed for her third grade year to begin. How would I do that here in SC? I also wanted to find out more information about joining the associations that would allow me more freedom to teach my daughter and now my son (kindergardener) without testing and excessive paperwork. Any information and suggestions would be of great help. Thank you.

Welcome to our forums and to homeschooling in SC! :smile2: I think you'll like homeschooling here better than in Virginia because there's less paperwork and oversight involved. Although VA may have required end-of-year assessments, SC does not for 3rd Option homeschoolers, so you're free to pass your daughter yourself now. :smile2: Any type of testing you do is up to you (standardized tests, teacher observations, portolio assessments, whatever).
To find out more about the legal requirements in SC, go to my Legal Requirements page at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/legal.htm When you're finished reading that, go to my FAQs page at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/faq.htm. And when you're finished reading that, go to my About Us page to find a list of good associations to join http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm
If you have any questions after reading through all that, please let us know. We'll be happy to help!
Warmly,
Dianna

I just wanted you to know that I moved from Va. a year and a half ago..mid year. Since you now live in S.C., you do not need to send the end of year testing to Va. Just call the school district where you resided and let them know of the move. Your children will then be taken off their records for homeschooling. I choose the 3rd option route here in S.C. I like it much better than what we went through in Va. Carolina Homeschooler has a great list of associations to choose from. Welcome!

What did you do to file under the 3rd option? I've read the pages and info but it's always nice to hear from someone in the same boat. LOL! Any input would be great. Thank you both!!!

How did you go about getting it started? I've read what needs to be done and I think I've got it but I would like to make sure. Thanks!!!

I'm not sure if I'm answering your question, but you just choose an association (a list of associations that participate in Carolina Homeschooler is here: http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm). They'll send you a membership packet that will explain what you need to do, or you can read it on their website. The first thing to do, though, is to join an association. :smile2:
Is that what you were asking?

All I have to do then is send in a copy of my diploma and pay their fees and agree to follow the 180 days and use an appropriate curriculum and keep records? That's all I have to do? Thanks, again.

You need to follow the requirements of the law (see http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/legal.htm), plus any requirements set by the association you choose (see http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm). We can't really get more specific than that - you'll need to talk to your association. They'll be able to walk you through this.
By the way, most associations don't require that you send a copy of your diploma; they just ask you to sign a form stating that you've graduated high school or have a GED.

Hi Sparrow!
I saw that a military move brought you to S.C. My hubby is in the military too! What base are you at? We are at Charleston. I joined Grace Association (3rd option) and you fill out your application online through their site. Maybe 2 weeks later you get their welcome back with their attendance form and then you are good to go! They will even contact the school district so no need to worry about that. I found them to be super nice when I called with my 1000 questions! lol! There is a link here that will take you to their site too.
