I am a member of a homeschooling group in my area, even though my son isn't really school age yet. I am wondering, what do you all of you fine folks think about registering him? There are field trips we make that I could get discounts and such by presenting my association card, but since he's not even 4 yet I haven't done it. I'm not even sure if they will let me register him yet, but I was thinking maybe I should. What are your opinions on this?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well, compulsory school age in SC is 5 before Sept 1. Now is this just a homeschooling "support" group that just does field trips and get togethers, or is this an Option 3 accountability group?
Don't quote me on this, but it is just a thought, "if" this is an Option 3 group and "if" you sign him up as a Pre-K student, then would you be obligated to fulfill all the requirements such as 180 days of teaching, keeping a plan book, portfolio, progress reports?? If compulsory attendance is 5 in SC, then why sign him up and make all the extra work for yourself when it isn't required.
If this is an Option 3 group, definetly ask the person in charge they would be better able to advise you.

If you go as part of a homeschool support group, I think you'd be able to get the discounted field trips. I personally would wait to join an association until your son was of compulsory attendance age so I wouldn't have to keep up with the documentation, but it's up to you. If you decide to register, a list of great associations is available here: http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm
Warmly,
