My oldest is only three so I realize I still have a little ways to go before we start homeschooling, however, I am confused as to when I must start kindergarten. She was born 3-30-03. So, what school year would I start her in kindergarten: Fall of 2007 or 2008?
TIA!

Kelly, kindergarten starts the year a child turns 5 by Sept 1st. On 3/30/07 your daughter will turn 4, and on 3/30/08 your daughter will turn 5, so she'll officially start kindergarten in the fall of 2008.

Thanks, Dianna. For the life of me I couldn't figure this one out (pregnancy brain, perhaps?). Thanks for putting it in simple words for me. LOL

Hello, I am a homeschooler who actually started my son in kindergarten early. I am not sorry I did. His birthday is in October, so he missed the cut off by a month and a few days. He is excelling and is in first grade this year. Can read better then most first graders, and his math skills are amazing. I think that every parent can choose what is best for their kids. That is what is so cool about homeschooling :biggrin2: Kids can work at their own pace. Not be rushed, or not be held behind by other children that have some problems in the area being studied. I wish you God's blessing in your homeschooling adventure. :biggrin2:

Hi, and welcome to our forums! :smile2: Yes, the wonderful thing about homeschooling is you never have to hold a child back, regardless of the grade level you put on paper. You can start teaching him "kindergarten" skills whenever they're ready. However, you don't have to start documenting or registering with an association (or getting a public school kindergarten waiver) until the age of 5 by September 1st. :biggrin2:

Is it ok to register before they would eligible for kindergarten? My son wouldn't be able to go for 2 full years because his birthday is in Oct (2002). However, I'm starting him on pre-k/k stuff this year, and would like to have the membership card to get discounts, etc. when our homeschool group goes places. What do you think?

Yes, you can probably register, if you'd like. Check with the association you're interested in if they accept pre-K registrations.
