It's time for a new contest! :smile2:

Share your favorite field trip excursions in this thread and you'll have a chance to win your choice of great prizes! I'll award one prize a day until the contest ends. If you're the only one to post on a specific day, you'll automatically be the winner. If more than one person posts, I'll put all your names in a hat and let my children choose the winner. [Limit one prize per person in this contest.]

Our favorite trip was our recent visit to Washington DC. There is so much to do there. We saw many memorials, museums, and govt buildings. Our favorites were the Library of Congress (each of us enjoyed this one-- even the six year old), and the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Natural History. We also really enjoyed the International Spy Museum (all of us), and the National Gallery of Art (parents) and the Smithsonian Institute's Sackler Museum of African Art (kids, as it had many interactive exhibits). Since every 'attraction' was free except the spy museum, it was a great trip. I highly recommend visiting DC.

It was also very clean, and felt 'safe' for a big city. Not particularly stroller friendly though. The Metro was a learning experience too, and one of my six year old son's favorite things to do.

We went on with our homeschool group. It was a boat excursion to Bull Island.(north of Charleston) We took a pontoon-type boat to a "deserted island" and learned about the wild life and sea life. We had a very knowledgable guide. On the boat ride over the guide had all sorts of sea creatures for the kids to look at. We packed a picnic lunch and ate on the island (no bathrooms though!). Then the guide played a game with the kids based on what they learned. It was fun! We even were allowed to bring back shells from the island. It was pricey ( I think it was around $15-20 a person), but it was very enjoyable and educational. Everyone had a good time from little ones to adults!

Well, we haven't homeschooled officially yet, we are newbies so I don't have past field trips that I can talk about. However, I am planning on taking an early morning trip to Folly Beach with my daughter before August so we can do a summer field trip. The plans are to hopefully see some volunteers from the Folly Beach Turtle Watch Program and walk with them to find nests and *fingers crossed* some hatchlings emerging. I just think it would such a fun field trip and not only would we learn about the turtles we would also be of service to something. My daughter loves the beach and marine life so I think this would be right up her alley!

One of my favorite field trip was one that I had to yank half of my kids to go on. Having four at that time, we all went everywhere together. I had teens and K-5 and a first grader.
We had planned on going to the local BILO 5 -a- day tour. The teens didn't want to go on a field trip to BILO.
Of all the trips I have taken in 13 years of homeschooling, I remember it the most and the teens wer soon won over.
The 5 a dy tour is about fruits and vegetables and eating correctly. We got a fine tour, they ask where we had heard about it. People came from the corporate office to be at the tour so we got special treatment. I learned things on that trip.
We went to all the stations of the store. The bakery gave cookies. The produce told us about Colorodo corn is the best corn. We tried a hugh tray of ready sliced fruits made especially for us.
We toured the freezer.
My teens got to check out someones grocery's and was told to apply at 16 if she wanted a job.
Each child got a free Bilo Bull large stuffed cow that retailed at that time for $6. They drew names and four of the kids got stuffed Veggie tales fruit of cucumber, Tomatoe and another one. We left with coupons for fee and $$$$ off on groceries and all kids of stickers, notepads etc... each child a arm load of stuff.
I learned that the thing at the door, that I thought was to alert store of shoplifters is actually a type of metal detector that detects weapons. We were showed the ceiling camera and I think we really got a great trip due to the fact that high up people from the corporate office came to see the trip in action. If you can get a trip with important people, it is worth the trip.

I took the 5 a day field trip @ 1999. I guess they still have the trip. i just contacted the local BILO store and ask. I chose a large, nice new store in our area and was well pleased. Having important people from the corporate office helped us get extra treatment I am sure. It was the best trip we have taken in 13 years of homeschooling and about the only trip I had to make them go on. Teens were not happy going to the grocery store. It prooves you can't judge a book by it's cover!
