I am using A World of Adventure and Math U See this year for my 12 and 9 year olds. So far we love it and things are going great. Math's a breeze and we find AWOA fun and interesting. I am awed by what my kids have learned in just a week. I am; however, feeling a little swamped. I feel like our school day is dragging on forever and I falling behind with other obligations (i.e. I'm down to my last pair of underpants and doing laundry at ten pm on a Friday). I'm hesitant to set a time limit on subjects as the kids are becoming really involved in their assignments. I'm sure that what I need to do is not strive to do every assignment of every day, but I could use the security of hearing someone else say it. I'd love to hear from other parents who are using AWOA or any Learning Adventure and Math U See. Would anyone be interested in a new section for that. Thanks for the encouragement in advance.

Chris, I'm not using what you're using, but with any curriculum you shouldn't strive to do every assignment, every day. The publisher of a curriculum does not know your child. They target their products to who they think are going to use them. You paid for it, so make it work for you - instead of you working for it. Does that make sense? You know your children; they don't. If your children want to delve deeper into a topic, let them go. You can skip what's not as interesting or important to your children (and you) and just keep going. Take what works from any curriculum and throw out the rest. Make it work for you.

Chris, I am using AWOA and math u see both this year too. We are doing the same (with the laundry and stuff). My boys both love it though. we arent doing quite as much reading as she suggest, i am using history pockets to supplement the lack of reading and doing more hands on because my oldest boy has adhd and getting him to just "read" is tough. I am starting day 10 tomorrow, I have scaled back a bit and am not frettin over the reading. did you buy the game to go with it.. It is a fun way to make sure they are getting the basics, etc. Why dont you email me off list, duboisa@bellsouth.net and we can exchange number and maybe some ideas and all.

I am having a little different concern. I feel like I am not doing everything I should.
We started last week and are using Abeka. I am doing it as they suggest, but it only takes about an hour (2nd grade), which I know that it will be about another week before everything comes into play with the cirriculum. I guess I am just worried that I am not doing all I should. She reads books and independtly works on her phonics at other times and I always make her think when she asks questions. I try to turn everything into a conversation not just a one word answer. I am second guessing myself as this is my first year and I am nervous and on top of that I do work (wish I could find a way out :doubt: ).
I am sure I need to relax, but just don't want to let her down. Thanks.

An hour of sit-down, structured time is usually all we do in the earlier grades. The rest of their learning is child-led. If you'd like, ask her what her interests are outside of the curriculum and let her explore those interests through educational videos, library books, field trips, etc.
I've heard that Abeka does tend to get overwhelming quickly, especially if you try to do every page, every worksheet, and every test; so remember to pick and choose what you want to use and relax. It sounds like you're doing a great job, and you're not letting her down. How can you be when you have her best interests at heart? :smile2:

Thanks Dianna. There are a lot of sheets, doesn't seem to be much teaching (I know it is early yet). Right now she seems kind of bored, but I explained that we are just doing some review, so I know where she stands and to get in the grove.
Good luck to everyone.
