I hope this finds everyone well here. I just had something terrible happen to my girl, Lottie who is 9, at school yesterday and it has disturbed me greatly. I just want to share and see what you might think of this. First off, I am pulling her out to HS her from now on. I had made this decision previously, but now this! Lottie has asthma and high blood pressure due to a congenital heart defect and she had been sick with a cold. She came home 1/2 day monday because of it and stayed home Tuesday. I sent her back Wednesday and this is where the story starts. She got into a terrible coughing fit and needed to go to the nurse because she was having trouble breathing and wanted her inhaler. (this is the part I am having the problem with) Her teacher told her NO! NO??? Excuse me? I thought that when we sent our kids to school, the teachers would know to treat them like their own in a way? The teacher knew Lottie's problems as we had went over them at the beginning of the year and she had a list of things that could potentially happen. Well, Lottie went into panic mode (if anyone has a child with asthma they know what this is) and ran out of the class. Can you believe the teacher wrote Lottie a note because of this and sent her to the principal??? I can only think Monday can't come soon enough. As for what I have done, I have refused for Lottie to go back (it's only a couple of days), I have gone to the school and confronted the teacher and the principal, and I have called the Stated Board of Education. I know I am new on here, but I just wanted to share this and maybe find some peace to know that I have done the right thing in keeping her out until next week when I start HS. I am outraged, dissappointed, and yes, I feel like crying.
Thanks so much for listening, Gwen

The reason that I pulled my son out of school was similar. It happened VVERY QUICKLY. He has ADHD and has trouble with sitting still and getting along, etc. We were at home ( our home not at school) and some kid from his class beat him up in our yard.. so i kept him out for a week. the kid was threatening him and when i went back to put him back in school they refused to move him to another class and refuse to protect him from this kid, so that was it.

To refuse medical treatment to a child goes way over the line. I encourage you to continue contacting the local school board and state DOE about this. Teachers shouldn't ever refuse medical treatment to a child. Please let us know how you're doing and how things go.

I absolutely agree with Diana. You should certainly not let this drop. This is a very serious thing, and should be brought to the attention of the school board. I am so sorry you and your child had to go through this... it is terrible. I do not think it is a normal occurence in schools, but I would make sure everyone knows about it that needs to. I wish you luck in all of this!

Teachers are suppost to care! However, some don't, but a good teacher can help a childs self esteem so much. Thirteen years ago I took my child out due to a teachers actions. It was worse because it was a pricy christian school.
She told my child that she was an idiot and couldn't learn anything ( She is in her last year of college with a 4.o GPA). She needed to wear nicer clothes and she stuck her with a straight pin to show the third grade class what blood looked like. I went balistic and have never regretted taking her out of school becoause honestly I would have struck the women if things continued and I'd have went to jail. This teacher lost half of her class each year before Christmas break each of the five years that she stayed. Frankly, I am not sure why she wasn't fired!
I homeschooled to build her confidence up as she tore it down quickly, and if christian school teachers act this way, what goes on in the public schools were my thoughts.

its unfortunate how bad the school systems are, especially in South Carolina. My son has ADD (which has slowly been going away as he has gotten older) and was in a special class in Florida that was specifically for kids like him (not bad or violent just couldnt sit still and got frustrated with the work kinda easily). It was an EXCELLENT system and he flourished. We moved to SC where they basically dump as many "special needs" kids into one class room as they can by law (to save funds) and my son, who went from being with kids that had trouble learning in a "standard" settings, to being with every bad kid in the school that couldnt function around other kids. (they even had multiple grades together so the bigger kids always beat on the little ones). When I insisted that he be taken out and moved to a less hostile environment, I was told (no exaggeration) that I would need to hire a lawyer if I had a problem with them.
