My daughter is currently enrolled in a private school, where she is receiving a great education. Until recently, we have not considered homeschooling, however the time demands in High School are really discouraging her. She doesn't have time to do the important fun activities (singing, piano, dance, book club and rushes through her Bible Study after the school demands) due to the amount of homework and time spent at school. In the seventh grade she took the Duke TIP SAT and received state honors in Math and Verbal. They send her special studies information and recently told me about the carolinahomeschooler web site. They can not give me any recommendations, but I did read about Virtual Schools in their newsletters.

Have any of your kids been involved with this type of schooling? If so, were they able to complete assignments quicker than regular school? Should we combine virtual schooling with some other type of instruction? Suggestions on programs and Virtual Schools would be appreciated.

We are hoping to let her begin in January 2007, if we can put together a plan. Thanks for the help.

A virtual school or correspondence school will probably take less time because your daughter will most likely be able to turn in her assignments at her own pace. However, she would still be considered a homeschooler in SC and won't receive a state diploma.

SC is in the beginning stages of offering a virtual school for high school students (see my news page http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/news.htm for more info), but they're probably at their quota for this year. If she goes through SC's virtual school, she'll still be considered a public school student, but would hopefully be able to work at her own pace (and thus have more time for the fun stuff).

You didn't mention homeschooling, so I don't know if you're considering that as an option. If Duke recommended my website, it may be that they were subtly encouraging you to homeschool your daughter. Homeschooling is a wonderful alternative for bright and gifted children. You and your daughter would need to develop your own learning goals, however, as well as decide on resources and materials, but we could help you with that.

Regarding combining, you could combine homeschooling with SC's Virtual School (they accept homeschool students on a space-available basis). You could also use specific correspondence courses or outside tutors to augment your homeschooling. There are a wide variety of options available. :smile2:

Please let me know if I didn't answer your questions or if my answer leads you to more questions.

Warmly,
Dianna
