Hi we are new to homeschooling and new to this board.
We have decided to take our DD out of public school due to problems with the school and the fact that she has stayed sick almost all the time since starting.
We have decided on an association to join. And we know what we are doing for writing, reading and math.
But we don't have a clue for science and social studies, the ass. we are joining ask for names of books and publishers
What are some of the ones you use?
thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to homeschooling!
You don't say how old your child is--that would help in suggesting curricula. However, library books on interesting subjects are always great ways to learn! We are currently using Story of the World with the associated activity book which lists other books on the subjects. It was written for the elementary school age child but even my middle schooler enjoys it--we just make her do more in depth studies and extra reading than we do our 4th grader. For science, Apologia offers great books for all ages. While we aren't using them this year (had already purchased something else) we have heard nothing but good things for all levels. Just remember to purchase the CD's if you are high school level.
Good luck coming up with the curriculum that fits your needs--not the other way around!!

As Anne Marie said, it would be helpful to know your daughter's age. What I prefer for science and social studies is good books (both fiction and non-fiction), good children's educational magazines (see the ones described in my links area at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/links.htm), the Learning & Discovery Channels, the zoo, museums, IMAXs, field trips, etc.
I list the above resources as my curriculum for the areas of science and social studies on my association paperwork, and I list "quality children's literature covering a variety of genres and authors, integrated across the curriculum" (or something very close to that description) for the area of reading. I don't usually list formal curricula for these areas because I've found structured curricula to limit my children's studies in these areas.
If you want suggestions for textbooks or other structured curricula, please tell us your daughter's age and we'll make more specific suggestions. There are some good resources out there if you'd rather go that route.
I hope this helps! :smile2:

Sorry about that. She is 5 will be 6 in May.
I am really excited about homeschooling,I wanted to do it all along but let my mom talk me out of it.And now my child is paying for it with the public school system.I just want to get her out of there as quick as I can.We have been having problems since the 2nd week of school. So we are doing what's best for my dd and I'n not listening to my family anymore.
thanks so much for getting back to my so quick.
I can use all the help I can get,my head is spining from all the different choices out there.

I would definitely recommend using resources other than textbooks for that age. If she's interested in insects, go to the library and get books and videos about insects. Document the topics under science, and the book under reading. If she watches a documentary about wagon trains, document that as social studies. If you go to the SC State Museum, document the topics she learns about under science and social studies. If you have a discussion about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, document that as science.
If you want a general guideline of typical things studied in your daughter's grade level, see the World Book link in my links area - http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/links.htm
I hope this helps.
Warmly,
Dianna
