I am not interested in any textbooks. But, what things would cover social studies in SC? Would a study of a different culture work? Is it things that would be covered in history and geography? Are there state standards that list what is supposed to be covered at each grade level? Or is it more of a character development course? Thanks!

Social studies is history, geography, and high school topics like psychology, sociology, and others along the same lines. A study of different cultures would fall under social studies.
The best resource for ideas about what to cover in each grade is World Book's Typical Course of Study (there's a link in my links area at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/links.htm). It's just a guideline, though, so don't feel you're required to follow it if you'd rather do something else.
Here's list of SC Curriculum Standards: http://ed.sc.gov/agency/offices/cso/ Keep in mind that SC falls dead last in the nation for achievement and we have a more than 50% drop out rate, so determine whether or not you really want to use our standards. :confused2

Thanks so much, Dianna!
I now see that all of history and geography are found under social studies, along with a few other things. For some reason, I thought that this was in addition to history. This is a great website you have put together!
I also saw that you organize trips. That is wonderful! We will be signing up for those as soon as we have moved. I saw the Box tops fundraiser. Do you have other fundraisers in place as well?

Thank you for your kind words about my website. :smile2: The Google ads you see are part of our fundraising. Every time someone clicks on a link in the ads, I receive a commission. All of that will go to our international trips. Also, in my links area, I have a searchbox to Amazon.com. If anyone orders books or products through my searchbox, our trip fund will get that commission.
I have over $100 so far in the trip fund. It's not much, but we just started doing this, so it'll add up by the time we take our first international trip! :smile2:
Warmly,
Dianna
