Hey all you parents have to check this out. It was a 20/20 study on schools in America but it seems they just ripped South Carolina Schools to pieces. I think this is the link.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfRUMmTs0ZA. If you cant reach it just go to www.youtube.com and search for Stupid in America. It was eye opening for me and reinforces why I homeschool.:eusa_clap

:shock:Wow! That is about all I can say to that. They did slay SC public schools and I agree with what was said. It isn't money that is gonna' make the difference, it is the teachers that are gonna' make the difference. As all of you know my daughter has dyslexia. They were not teaching her. They put her in a room for 2 hours a day to do absolutely nothing! I feel for the young gentleman who could not read on a high school level. In the last IEP meeting (most of you know what this is they actually showed the meeting on the tape in progress) for my daughter, they actually told me that she didn't have to pass to move up to the next grade. All she had to do was show up. They was another reason I took her out. I couldn't believe they actually said that and the 20/20 show put it on the mark. Teachers don't care so, why should we trust our children's lives to them? I made a choice. I homeschool and I can't regret that because Lottie is doing so well! I did the only thing I could do, because private school was out due to the money, there were no other schools I could "bus" her to, and so it was me. I hope that show opens up the minds of what is really going on in South Carolina public schools and in America, but my son and daughter won't be there to see it happen because I wouldn't trade homeschool for nothing. I see everyday what my child learns and I know she learns it. This fall my son starts kindergarten at home and I will be able to take the steps with him and I thank the association I am with for that ability. THanks for sharing that 20/20 show. I really hope that it makes a difference.

Dawn, I saw it when I originally aired and whew... they hit SC pretty hard! I'm not sure if the show mentioned this, but we have more than a 50% drop-out rate here in SC. Sad, isn't it?

I have not watched the video yet.. it is downloading.. But I can believe it. My son has Asperger's, Bipolar-Nos, ADD/ADHD, Generalized Anxiety and sensory issues. They offered him NO NO NO NO services. When we moved here from CT he had and IEP they did their own testing and because his IQ was high they took everything away. Even though he would slip into this dark place and do nothing in school they said there was nothing wrong. They said he wasnt a disruption to the school.. So it didnt matter he was hurting himself as long as he didnt cause a scene while doing it.

This school year he failed the whole year.. U's across the board. We were told they didnt care about his grades because FINALLY other kids wanted something to do with him.. He wasnt hitting himself, or biting himself or crying as much anymore. So they were going to pass him "socially" nevermind he failed the year.

They actually gave him an award for improving socially. However when I talked to kids in his class they all said.. Nate is really nice, never has a mean thing to say to anyone and is never mean but he is so wierd and people make fun of him everyday. However the teacher said this never happened.

So after being ignored and given the run around about special services at the advice of his Pdoc and Tdoc I told them I was going to homeschool him because how could a school allow a kid to fail like that and do nothing about it.. They should be ashamed of themselves.

So here we are.. New to homeschooling..

If I hadnt already made the decision to homeschool (and convinced my husband it was the thing to do) this video would have! I cant say as I am completely shocked by it but it is unbelievable some of the information there about how much is spent per child and US compared to other country's etc. Thanks for sharing!

The really sad part to this is that it isn't just SC; we lived in central NJ for almost 9 years and I can tell you from experience: the "excellent" schools there were mediocre at best. Teaching was once one of the caring professions but from what I saw (and as a library aide I had a front-row seat!) it's not anymore. Starting salaries for teachers in my district ranged from $47,000-50,000/year, a lot of money for someone with a bachelor's in education and 6 big weeks of student teaching experience. People were starting to enter the field for the money and lifestyle, not because they loved children or teaching. And it showed.

Thanks for letting me vent!

:wave:Hi I've been homeschooling for around a year. I pulled my son out in his first year of middle school because of grades and behavior issues. Kids would hit him and he'd come home with big bruises and knots in his head. The teachers and principle never had any answers. They would tell me, "Well Zach has to tell us when it happens" Never mind the fact that my son is physically hurt and he's naming the person who did it, I guess his timing was bad, huh? Eventually he began to hit back and guess what? He was suspended for 3 to 5 days !! Well I withdrew him and homeschooled him for three months. During this time the whole school faculty got replaced almost. New principle with better goals and plans for disipline. Before, this school looked like a prison! Well, Zac came to me and said Mom I want to try and go back to public school. RELUCTANTLY I gave it a shot. Worse mistake I ever made!! Needless to say, my son failed the 6th grade and is now home and has a grade point average of 90%. Homeschooling is not easy but boy is it worth it!!!!!!!!!! I've since withdrew my twin daughters also because the elementary school stinks here too. Every day my daughter Beth would come home crying because of teasing and eventually name calling insued. We are Christians and we have devices on our TV, DVD, and VCR to make sure no vulgar language comes through and here we send our ten year old daughters to school for an education and they're taught how to curse each other out!! Rediculous!! Basically we pay these teachers and principles to do absolutely nothing!! My son was even pushed out of the 5th grade, not because he passed but because they said he was a big boy and the younger children may feel threatened by his size!!! Right now my son is 13 and is the same height as his 10 yr. old sisters !!! THANK GOD for having the right to homeschool!!

I know ps left my child who needed help with reading lacking for the help. That is why we took her out 9 years ago now. With hubby sick now and unable to work again I wonder about sending her and brothers back. I may have to next year. I hate it but we have to have money to fed them. God will really have to work this one out for us.
