I have been thinking about joining the South Carolina Association of Indepedent Home Schools. It does not look as though it is a partner with Carolina Homeschooler. I also would like to join the Home School Legal Defense Association just to be sure all is covered.
How would joining one from Carolina Homeschooler be different from joining SC Assoc.?

Thank you,
Lynda

SCAIHS is an Option 2 association. You'll have different requirements if you join (required testing, more paperwork, have to approve your curriculum, lots more expensive). Option 3 associations serve the same purpose, and require less paperwork, no testing requirement, no curriculum approval, and are much less expensive.

The vast majority of homeschoolers in SC homeschool through an Option 3 association, but SCAIHS is good for homeschoolers who feel they need a lot of hand-holding and for those who feel they can't homeschool without having an organization to be accountable to. I usually recommend them to several homeschooling families each year who I feel need their services, so I'm glad they're an option. :smile2:

You'll find more information in my FAQ section at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/faq.htm

Thank you for your responses.

I will definitely consider the option 3 associations. I am going to browse them in more depth. I was thinking that because option 3 was so flexible that they are not as accredited as the Option 2 association. However, by your response, I am under the impression that my thinking was incorrect.

Thank you,
Lynda

Lynda, you're welcome. :smile2: None of the associations (whether Option 2 or Option 3) are "accredited" in the sense that you're probably thinking of. They all serve the same purpose and have the same legal standing. I wish they wouldn't call themselves "accredited", because it's very misleading. The SC Dept. of Education doesn't accredit any homeschool, homeschool association, or private school in the state.

Warmly,
Dianna

As we are researching and discussing, our thoughts are to use Homeward Education Assocation. My husband, son and I sat and conversed about it last night.

I must say that I am impressed with the response my son is giving. He is coming up with all kinds of ideas. He seems to be very open with our ideas, too, which is a drastic change. Usually, he wants to do it his way, and his way is right. It is good to be strong, but I would like him to be a little flexible, too.

I am going to contact a couple colleges in the Charleston area, and see what their requirements are for high school classes. We will focus his elective studies on what is required for them.

Thank you!

Hi Lynda,
I am in the Charleston area also. I love Option 3. We have huge support group here that is 350 members strong -LCHEA.net. They are great about answering questions for college bound students. We also offer co-op classes and TTC offers dual credits. Between my organization, lchea, and carolina homeschooler, any questions that may arise are quickly answered.
Good Luck with whichever you choose,
