Hi all,
I have a 9 year old son that has been recently diagnosed as bipoler. This came about due to multiple incidents with the school where he has now been labeled as having disruptive behavior issues. The problems I am facing are that the vice-principal and counselor both are very understanding and are trying to help us make the necessary adjustments to help him. Unfortunately his teacher is very "old school" and simply has one way of teaching and if the child doesn't fit into her "way of teaching" then they pretty much get left behind. I am very concerned that more focus will be put on his behavior than on his learning. I am a free-lance accountant and do quite a bit of my work from home. On the days that I have to go to a client's office, 9 times out of 10 the office is empty and I am only there about an hour. I feel that I would have no problems handling the homeschooling, my concern is with him. Just wondering how "structured" most of you have your homeschooling set up and if you think that this is a workable situation. Thanks for your insight!
Sincerely,
Desparate Mom of a Sweet but Misunderstood Child :confused2

:wave:Hey there. I feel your pain. My daughter has dyslexia and a lot of other parents on here homeschool children ADHD, ADD, etc. If you feel this is something you want to do then do it. It possibly could help him a lot to be able to work at his own pace and get individual attention. My homeschool is "sorta" structured, more for me than for my kids. I work from home early in the morning and homeschool in the afternoon. The greatest thing about homeschooling is that you can change the schedule to suit your needs on any given day. Say, for instance, he is having a bad day, well instead of schooling that particular day do something that will help him and catch up another day. I think you have a very workable situation to go with. A lot of parents on here work out of the home full time and then homeschool later, so you are very lucky in that regard. I hope that this has helped some. I am sure you will get lots of feedback from a lot of wonderful people on here. If you need anything just holler.

Hi, and welcome to our forums!

I think your situation would definitely be workable if you were to homeschool. Learning happens everywhere, and can certainly happen if you need to take your son to the office with you.

I take an unstructured, flexible approach to homeschooling. Read through our FAQs at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/faq.htm and through these forums for more information about different homeschooling methods and styles.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Warmly,
