I know I want to do some type of timeline with my daughter for history. History can be such a huge subject covering a lot of things. So a timeline would just keep expanding...

I'm worried if I get a binder type timeline like “We Signed the Declaration When Beethoven Was Five?” We'd run out of room.

I'd like an ongoing timeline we can start and keep going with till she finishes school. We can also use it as review to remember events we've studied.

Has anyone ever used index cards for a timeline? Writing one event per card and putting them in chronological order? Would be a mess if the box turned over though, LOL.

Any advice?

Thanks, Carole

We used the suggestion that the Mystery of History series uses. We purchased one of those cardboard science fair displays. They sell them at Wal-mart in the stationary/office supply section. You open it up and use it with the long sides vertical. You can even put a little nail in the wall and hang it on the wall during school time and take it down for other times. We also used the timeline figures from Homeschooling in the Woods. They are black and white, but my dd enjoyed coloring them with colored pencils. Or you could just make your own little figures out of index cards or construction paper.

Hint: in the craft section of Wal-mart they sell a box of little double sided photo squares for scrapbooking. They are less than $3.00 and work great for this project. Much better than taking tape and folding it over.

Hope this helps!!

I actually think that's a great idea. I love history taught by timelines, rather than subjects (this war, that war, etc).
I think index cards would be a neat way to do it. You could punch a hole in the sides and tie them together, that way when you put them away you could just fold them one under the other. Then if they fell out of the box they'd still be attached in the right order. (Did that make sense?)

Yes, that did make sense. Never thought of a way to connect them, but that would work.
Thanks a lot.

I've never used them for index cards, but craft stores sell large (~2") binder-like rings, They are used to hold individual ziplock baggies with DMC floss in them. You put each color in a baggy, then used the rings to hold all the baggies for an individual project together. I think they would work well for index cards too.

Cool, I will have to look for them.
We're still figuring out which way to go...
