... and could only bring a suitcase full of homeschooling material for a 1st grader, what would you choose?

Hope this is thought provoking in a fun way. It is also a real concern of mine.

My husband, our 6 yr old son and I are taking a multi-year trip on our sailboat through Central and South America and the eastern Caribbean. We'll be homeschooling of course. We were in the Bahamas for a few months last year, but otherwise haven't done anything like this before. We will have an internet connection through internet cafes or wireless in more populated ports. Otherwise, I think we should bring all homeschool needs. Customs fees and unreliable and expensive shipping prevent having anything but the most essential items shipped to us from what I've heard and read.

Our space is limited. Not a suitcase, more like a big dresser. I want to make sure I'm not forgetting anything. My husband seems to think that we need room for sails, a life raft, spare parts for the engine and boat, tools and other useless man stuff. Go figure. :smile2:

Our current favorite resources are:
-the What your Child Needs to Know in First Grade, etc. series
-Words Their Way
-Singapore Math and Everyday Math material
-Kingfisher and Kingfisher first encylopedias
-the Earlybird Science series
-children's classic for read aloud
-Scholastic and other leveled readers (his reading level is Henry and Mudge and Jigsaw Jones).
-games (Monopoly, snap circuit set, legos, mazes, puzzles, etc.)
- art and craft supplies
- also, we have Rosetta Stone for Spanish and some materials for French.

Any suggestions and ideas would be really helpful!
Thanks.

This is such a great question. I'll have to think about it a while and come back to answer. In the meantime, I think I'm going to spotlight this question, and a couple of others in my upcoming email newsletter. Hopefully you'll get more responses then! :smile2:

Warmly,

That's a pretty thorough list. The only things I might add would be a deck of cards, and some social study guides directly related to the countries you will be traveling to/through/around. Make it not only a memorable experience, but an educational one too? :biggrin2:
