A Time to Connect:

1. How will I home school through the high school years?

2. What style of homeschooling will work for my family? How many styles are there?

3. What about the SAT test? Are we prepared?

4. How will my children get socialization and connect with other children?

5. Where will I be able to find support and other Moms that I can relate to?

6. What about subjects like Geometry, Driver’s Education, art and creative writing? How will I be able to cover these things at home?

7. What kind of programs are available if I want my child to learn to play to play an instrument or participate in a band?

8. Ever wonder about college? Applications, admissions and scholarships?

9. Will my elementary or middle school child miss out on social activities, group field trips, yearbooks, etc...?

10. What about team sports?

You’ll find these answers, and more, at the Upstate Homeschool Connections Seminar. You’ll be able to hear from experienced homeschooling parents who’ve asked the exact same questions! There will also be a question and answer time after the conference that will give you the opportunity to ask one-on-one questions of your speakers!

You will also be provided with a copy of S.C. home schooling laws and have an opportunity to purchase a copy of the “Home Schooling Resource Directory” .

Speakers:

Shay Kemp: Shay Kemp is a certified teacher and she and her husband are about to begin their 6th year of homeschooling their 4 children. She is the director of LINK Support Group (formerly HOMES), which offers field trips, parties, and other educational and socialization opportunities for homeschoolers in the Upstate. Shay is also Worship Pastor at Calvary Christian Fellowship in Boiling Springs, SC.

Susan Ledford: Susan Ledford has homeschooled her three children since the birth of her first in 1995. She is a mother of three, and the editor of the Homeschool Resources Directory for SC, now in its tenth year. Drawn to homeschooling for academic reasons initially, she now enjoys homeschooling for the family-centered life it brings and for the flexibility and child-specific education possible. In addition, she works outside the home full-time in a retail environment and does freelance writing part-time.

Julie Ridenour: Julie Ridenour is the mother of 4 children and has been home schooling for 15 years. Julie's children are ages 20, 18, 16, and 13. Her oldest daughter, Katelyn, is a junior at Converse College, double majoring in piano and clarinet performance. Her second daughter, Jocelyn, graduated in May and will be attending Baylor University in the fall to study piano performance. Joshua will be a junior this year and Cassaundra will be in 8th grade. In addition to her responsibilities as a home school Mom, Julie has taught geography to elementary home school students, teaches debate classes to prepare students for participation in NCFCA, a home school debate league, and is the Executive Director for the Lawson Band at Converse College, a band which provides home schooled students the opportunity to participate in a concert band.

Kristi Walker: Kristi and David Walker are beginning their 7th year of homeschooling their 4 children. Their children are ages 14, 10, 8 and 5. Kristi initially began homeschooling their children because she and David felt called to do so, as well as for the academic excellence they wanted to provide for their children. They enjoy traveling and have found that homeschooling accommodates and enriches their family time together. Kristi is also the Director of STARS co-op and the Broker-in-Charge/Owner of Walker & Co. Realty in Spartanburg, SC. In addition to directing the co-op, she also teaches high school classes there each year.
