I'm trying to get a handle on what a "typical" day is for high school homeschoolers (realizing that there is no typical in homeschooling). About how many hours do you spend teaching? Does you child work mostly on his own, with little intervention from you or do you guide him through the lessons?

Any and all suggestions and comments are welcome!

Hi Charmed, my son graduated last year and is now in college. His day varied, depending on what subjects he was studying, but this is a general outline. There were some subjects that he needed to study a little each day (math, foreign language) and others that he could do intensely in several months and then move on to something else (history, mythology, literature, science, etc). He preferred to do block schedule as much as possible.

If he was volunteering or doing an apprenticeship, then part of some days would be spent on that. Otherwise, he spent his day working on the various subjects. He self-taught a lot of subjects (Mythology, for example) by reading books before going to sleep at night or on weekends during his free time, etc. It was something he enjoyed, so it wasn't considered "school work".

His days weren't strictly scheduled, but a mix - sometimes he'd work on learning activities 8 hours, sometimes 2 hours. He also had a part-time job during his high school years, so that had to factor in.

I hope this gives you an idea of how we scheduled (or didn't schedule) our days. Let me know if you have any questions. :smile2: Also, let me know if you want me to list you on our current members list.

Warmly,
Dianna

Hi Charmed, My daughter Just started 10th grade homeschooling. We get up about 8:00 am and have breakfast. Then she starts her studies without me having to tell her to do so. She works on her own unless of course she runs into something she needs help with. She works on studying things like language, chemistry, grammar, algebra II and history. When she gets everything done that I had planed for that day she does about a half hour of typing and then at least an hour of reading. We have little breaks within that time to keep the stress down. I would say she get started about 9:00 am and is done with what I call her main course by about 12:00 noon, then has lunch and then the typing and reading so I would say she spends about 4 1/2 to 5 hours, sometimes less sometimes more. She also goes to a tutor 3 days a week for extra help. I have some health problems and sometimes need an extra hand in helping her. We are happy with how things work out with this schedule. I am also planning to for Monica to take a driving course late this fall and the CPR, life saving and infant and child CPR course from the Red Cross. I am also looking for someone to teach her guitar maybe two days a week and also someone to teach her art. As long as she don't feel over overwhelmed I will let her take whatever classes she wants. As long as her grades are staying up we are OK, if her grades starts falling we start taking away extra curricular things. Hope that give you an idea about how we are doing things, I am sure there are as many different ways to do the teaching as there are people homeschooling.

Teresa (Mom to Monica 10th grade homeschooler)

Sounds like she is doing well.
