Hi:

Wondering how long to keep work in portfolio for elem and mid school child? Obviously, you'd keep std test scores and significant artwork or writing, but what about course tests and other work?

thanks,

marty

Hi Marty,

I usually keep everything for about a month or so into the new school year. Then I'll toss everything except for the biannual reports, weekly journals, and test scores (if any). I also keep some writing if I want to save it for them to see later (or in the case of high school, in case we need to put together writing samples for college admissions), and I keep whatever else is important to them (artwork, etc).

I've already graduated one and this method has worked well for me, but I know others do things differently. Hopefully they'll jump in to share their methods. :smile2:

Warmly,
Dianna

Thanks for your reply. I usually keep stuff a yr except for certain items but a friend keeps all of her son's stuff.

I think this is a great question, and one that isn't really adressed in the state law (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

I wanted to add that for high school records I set up for each student a 3 ring binder to keep their information. I have tabs designated for each credit they will earn and behind each tab I keep the following info:

A) if using a text book: Text title, publisher and copyright info, table of contents

B) if using other materials/methods: a contract outlining work required to earn credit, or other evidence of work completed (usually a one page synopsis of the course similar to a syllabus)

I keep a current tally of credits earned and credits needed in the very front so I can see at a glance where we are ... and where we need to be going.

You can also keep writing samples behind the appropriate tab, and create a tab for test scores and extracurricular activities.

This binder is solely for me to keep track of what has been completed so that when we prepare a transcript I can look back and be certain of the topics we covered. By using a binder I am able to keep 4 - 5 years worth of information in one convenient place.

I wanted to add that for high school records... <snip>

Susan, thank you so much for posting this. I did something similar for my oldest (who just graduated) and didn't think to mention that my high school record-keeping is different.

Thanks again for posting and clarifying. :smile2:

Warmly,
Dianna
