Hi all! I just had a question about grammer/literature. We are using BJU curriculum and have grammer text books and literature text. My question is do we do it together or can we break it into semesters? I was questioning that because of the records you turn in at the end of the year for high school transcripts. I am a member of Grace Assoc. in Florence and could probably call but as normal I think of these things after hours and thought you could help :smile2: me now. Thanks for any comments!

The way our homeschooling law divides subjects doesn't really mesh well with high school. Traditional high school English classes consist of: writing/composition, grammar, literature, & vocabulary. They are all rolled into one course (although grammar is not emphasized as much). These courses are usually called English I, English II, English III, and English IV, and public school students typically do all the components each year. As homeschoolers, we have flexibility in when and how we present these concepts and we can still fold them into the traditional English I, II, III, IV titles. So the answer to your question is yes, you can break it into semesters and still fold it all into one English I (9th grade) credit.

Okay, I have a question in regard to this. If my ninth grade daughter already has a high school credit for English Honors I, what English should she be doing now? Do I just call whatever English we end up doing, English II?

This is something that is very confusing to me, trying to figure out exactly what we need.

Suzanne, if you want, just count the credit she already has as English I Honors, and keep going with II, III, & IV. Since she'll be finished with all 4 English credits at the end of her Junior year, let her focus on her favorite kind of writing (Creative Writing, for example) or Literature (Shakespeare, for example) during her senior year and count it as an elective. Would that work?

Also, remember that you don't have to use the standard English I, II, III, IV titles. I found it easier to use them for my oldest son (graduated last year), but you can use a different format if you'd like.
