View Full Version : New To SC...Need Advice
Hi, I am going to be moving to Abbeville, and I have always home schooled my daughter who is seven now. We are from Connecticut and I was wondering would you know, if when we arrive I have to notify the school that we are there and will be home schooling? Or do we just start doing it and don't have to announce anything to anyone, except joining the association or whatever? I'm not too "up" on South Carolina's home schooling. lol! :)
Also does anyone know anything about Abbeville at all. It seems nice enough, but I know nothing about it except for historical things. Is it a good place to live? We can go any where, I just picked Abbeville. So any info would be great if anyone knows.
Thanks so much

Erin, you don't have to contact the school, but your daughter does need to be registered as a homeschooler relatively quickly in order to avoid truancy issues. I would recommend joining the association of your choice before you arrive just to make things easier on you. A list of good associations is available at www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm (http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/aboutus.htm)
I don't have any information about Abbeville, but I hope others here do. I don't think I have any support groups in Abbeville listing on my support groups page, but take a look at it just in case: www.carolinahomeschooler.com/support.htm (http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/support.htm)
Let me know if there's anything else we can do to help! :smile2:

Hi Erin, it is nice to meet you. My whole family is from the North but I was raised in the south. I have family in Mystic, CT
I am in the midlands, but know a few people from Abbeville and it is a nice place. Not too far from Columbia and Greenevill so you have lots of stuff to choose from.
I have a son whom I am homeschooling who is six and we are working on first grade. We are doing the Abeka curriculum.
Welcome to SC and to the boards.

Hi and welcome to SC! I've never lived in Abbeville, but I grew up in nearby Greenwood. I haven't been there in a long time, but Abbeville was a nice small town w/a quaint town square. Why did you pick Abbeville? Is this a job related move or just an out of the blue one?

My sister lives in Abbeville. It is such a cute little town. We love visiting her. The square is great. On nice evenings, we have dinner and then walk around the square, get ice cream, and sit in the center of the square. There are fountains, benches, etc.
Last time we were there, my daughter asked a man if she could pet his dog, and he just handed the leash over to her and let her walk him. :D It seems like a very friendly area. Oh, and we went to a park a few towns over to go swimming. That town was called Calhoun Falls. Anyway, it was nice, and not a long drive from Abbeville.
If you have any specific questions, I can ask my sister and let you know. She won't know anything about homeschooling though.
Good luck with your move!

:biggrin2: Welcome to our house , nice to meet you.
Oh thank you all for your replys. I couldn't find my post so I wasn't here for a while.
We picked Abbeville out of the blue, and because there is a big old house we are looking at there. It looks really nice, but I hope they like new people and everything? Anyway, it seems real nice. I was concerned when we first decided to move there because I didn't understand the HS laws in other states. But after reading them over and listening to others in SC I can see it's relitively easy as long as I join an association. We don't have that here in Ct. so I wasn't familiar with it. But sounds great and pretty easy and a good way to go. I know nothing about South Carolina but I know it's nice and the people are nice and gracious. Thank you all for helping me out and welcoming me.

Angie, I know you weren't asking me that question, but wanted to respond anyway. Abeka is fine for a lot of people, but it's best for people who feel comfortable not doing every single page, every single test, etc. Whenever I get calls or emails about burnout, it's usually from mom's using Abeka. When I tell them that it's perfectly okay to tailor Abeka to fit the needs of their children (and toss out chapters they don't want or need), things go better for them. Many are then able to check out other resources that may be a better fit for their children's needs & learning style.
I hope this helps.

It helps.. That is kind of what we did this year with the history thing, some of it was dumb, but most of it was pretty good. I didnt do any testing to amount to anything this year, b/c I think my kids needed the break, ( dont they call this Deschooling????)
Do you have any better ideas?

Yes, it's called deschooling, and it's perfectly normal. :smile2: I'll answer your questions on your other thread asking about curricula so it won't get buried in this thread. Look there! :smile2:
