Can Sign Language satsify the credit for the High School Foreign Language requirement?

I know some colleges won't accept it, but the local Tech college doesn't require a foreign language at all.

Thanks!

Many do, but usually it's American Sign Language, which has its own grammatical structure just like any foreign language. Other forms of signed language like Signed English (which is basically just signing English as we would speak it), probably wouldn't be considered a foreign language.

The best thing to do would be to call the colleges your daughter is interested in attending and see if they'll accept ASL as a foreign language. If not, she could always take it as an elective. If the college doesn't require foreign language credit, then you don't have to worry about it.

I hope this helps. :smile2:

Doesn't the state require a credit for Foreign Language for Option # 3 or is it just at the discretion of the option #3 association ?? Our association requires 1 credit of Foreign Language, are there other option #3 associations that don't???

Thanks for the help.

Most of the 3rd Option associations don't have specific requirements as far as credits go, unless they provide their own diploma for students and have requirements for that. The state doesn't require specific credits for high school homeschoolers, either, other than the literature, composition, math, science, social studies subject area requirements.

Your best bet for determining what your daughter should take would be to consider her future career goals. If she plans on going to college or technical school, find out what their requirements are and plan credits around that. If she's planning to enter the job force and skip college, plan her credits around what would be most beneficial to her in the real world. If your association requires a foreign language credit, and you truly don't see the need for it due to your daughter's goals, then switch to an association that is more compatible with your needs.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have more questions.

Warmly,
Dianna
