We welcome children and youth to our forums. Although they can view all forums, they have posting access only to the forums in the Children and Youth Area, and in the class forums if they're enrolled in one of our courses. Their posts are completely monitored, but private messages are from member to member and can't be viewed by anyone else. If your child receives a private message that you feel is inappropriate, please forward the private message to me for action.

In order for your children to participate, they'll need to register for separate accounts. When they enter their birthdates at the beginning of the registration process, it will flag them as COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) members if they're under 13. Their registrations will be put on hold until you (the parent) mail back the parental permission forms authorizing them to participate in our forums. If they're 13 or over, they'll be able to register as a parent would, but they'll need to send me an email or private message letting me know they're a teen so I can give them access to our youth area.

Here is more information about registering for both types of accounts:

Parent & Students Over 13
Parents and students (ages 13 and over) both follow the same procedures to register for an account. Here are the basics:

Parents
To register for an account, go to the register link in the navigation bar near the top of the page (it's below the keyboard picture, and is the first link on the left). Follow the instructions to create an account. After it's created, check your email for your activation message. Click on the link to activate your account. Then log out of your account (if you're still logged in) so your student can create her account.

Students
Go to the register link just like your parents did (see the "parents" section above) and follow the same procedure outlined there. The only thing I'll ask you to do differently is to email me after you create your account (use the contact us link at the bottom of the page) to let me know that you're a student so I can give you access to the Children and Youth Area.

Students Under 13
When your student (under 13) enters his birthdate at the beginning of the registration process, it will flag him as COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) registrant. His registration will be put on hold until you (the parent) mail back the parental permission form authorizing him to participate in our forums. Here are the exact steps you need to take to register your child (under 13) for an account (it looks worse than it is):

1. If you're signed in under your account, sign out. Then click on the Register button to register a new account for your child.

2. Enter your child's birth date.

3. Read the COPPA Policy and Forum Rules.

4. Click in the "I have read, and agree to..." box to put a checkmark in the box.

5. Click on the Register button at the bottom.

6. Let your child choose a username and password.

7. Enter the child's email address (or the parent's email address if the child doesn't have one).

8. Enter your (the parent's) email address.

9. Complete the Image Verification portion.

10. Complete the Time Zone and Administrator Email section.

11. Click on the Complete Registration button.

12. Ask your child to download his email (if he registered with his own email address. If not, download your email), read the Activate Membership email, and click on the link to activate his account. His account is now created and will be on hold until you complete your part of the COPPA process.

13. Now download your email and read the notice explaining that your child has signed up for an account. There will be a link to the COPPA form you need to sign. Use your child's Username and Password included in the email to access the form. Once you access the page, you'll see the title COPPA Information near the top of the page. In that section, click on the link that says Display Permissions Form.

14. Print the form, read it, complete the required information, sign it, and send it to me at the address on the form.

15. I will activate your child's account as soon as I receive it, and your child will have access to the Children and Youth Area.

Please let me know if you have any questions or encounter any difficulties.

Warmly,
Dianna
