Do you have a favorite homeschooling moment? Anything that made you especially glad that you're homeschooling your children? Click on the reply button, tell us about it, and win your choice of free supplies (see our contests page at http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/contests.htm for a list).

I want to clear off my shelves quickly, so I'll give out one prize a day until they're gone. If you're the only one to post a "favorite moment" on a specific day, you'll automatically be the winner. If more than one person posts a moment, I'll put all your names in a hat and let my children choose the winner.

You can enter as many moments as you want each day - the more, the merrier, and the sooner I'll get my decluttering finished! :eusa_danc

So have fun and post away in this thread... I'll even pay the postage!

Warmly,
Dianna

My favorite moment of any day is when the kids just finially get something that we have worked on for so so so long. Like borrowing in subtraction. The boys had a horrible time with it in the beginning of 2nd grade so I just dropped it. Then at the last of the year I tried it again and they kinda got it a little. Then this year I started up again and they seem to understand it. I was like ok; we are getting somewhere.

Sometimes you just have to step back and say they are not ready yet.

While my youngest son (6 yrs.) was taking tennis lessons, my oldest son (10 yrs.) would bring a book to read. A grandfather, who brought his granddaughter to lessons, was intrigued by the types of books that my oldest was reading. He always had a lot of questions for me and my son about home schooling, but you could always tell he thought that I was making a mistake.
One day, I had to spend some time with my youngest on the court and I noticed this man and my son talking up a storm. I was finally able to get away to see what they were so intensely talking about. To my surprise, the man was "quizzing" my son. I was a bit perturbed at first because he clearly did so when I wasn't around. So I stood there and listened before I spoke and I am so glad I did. The quiz was on World War 2 and to the man's surprise, my son passed with flying colors. He even had to tell me how much knowledge my son had of that era. Little did he know that just the week prior, he had checked out about 5 books on World War 2 on his own from the library. What a wonderful home school moment and so I was proud to call ourselves homeschoolers.:biggrin2:
I convinced him that home schooling was a great option (not that I needed to for my sake). He was impressed, not only with my son's knowledge, but with his conversation skills too. For the rest of the time we met for lessons, my son and that grandfather had a great time talking to each other. What more could you ask for!

home schooling from the heart,
Lora

Just yesterday we had what I consider our favorite homeschooling moment, and I really wish it would happen more often. We are talking about some subject, (usually it's English or Spelling -- yikes!) and something strikes us funny, and we start to laugh, and laugh, and before you know it, we are all practically in the floor bellylaughing over something! I think to myself, "now if they were in a classroom, this could never happen, because the teacher would have to get control of the class..." But here at home, we can laugh to our hearts' content and enjoy each other's company. Laughter is the best medicine!

Best homeschooling moment....is when we are working on a subject like a history/geography and they discuss differnent housing and then we read a book that takes place in the same region and it is WOW! "Mom, I remember we learned about those.." I just love it when for one reason or another topics overlap and the light goes on!

Another warm and fuzzy moment(s) for me is when we are working on a study and I am reading and have all the kids sitting with me on the couch. I have had to work hard at this and it is very rewarding.

After a Co-Op class one day I took my 2 girls to the mall for lunch. As we sat down my oldest daughter (who is 8) immediately took us to prayer and then helped her younger sister divide their lunch. A few minutes later, a lady approached me and said she noticed my children's behavior, their kindness toward each other, and asked if I homeschooled my girls. I told her yes and she said she could tell by their actions. She then told me to keep up the good work and continue homeschooling them because kids today aren't raised like they sould be. Most parents don't take the time to teach their kids anything. They just rely on school for whatever school offers. That for me was a "Proud Mama" moment.

Ladies, those are great special moments. Thanks for sharing with us. I love these posts.

Another favorite of mine is when my kids do oral reports and never act nervous at all. Folks will come up to me and say, "Your kids did great with that oral report. They are so smart." I feel so good inside.

Actually my kids do wonderful with oral reports and such but putting things on paper is much harder for them to do but we keep working at it.
We just have to hang in there on that one.

Favorite homeschooling moment...today had to be on the list. After my oldest completed his work, as a group effort we are doing a family project to go with our Easter study. We picked out what we wanted to draw, with the help of an overhead projector, on a twin sheet to color in and use as an Easter table cloth. Tomorrow all of them will work on coloring in sections. We included a map to show the events of Jesus' last week, and coloring pages such as Palm Sunday and the fisherman. They even called Grandma and told her we will supply the table cloth. This will be so much fun when they can explain what they have learned by showing it! The little kids might not have "done the work" that the older one has; but they have sat in on the stories and had coloring pages to do.

As a parent of two children, that have experienced the public school whoopla, I have many moments that I cherish. First, I would just say the peace of daily life. No more rat race, trying to keep up with the lower standard education. We no longer have to be confined to someone else's plan. Secondly, our children have learned what independence can offer them. They are obedient to their parents decisions for their education and have learned to do their work for their own profit. They feel that their education is their choice, because we as parents have chosen curriculum that caters to their learning style. Thirdly, they are mastering each lesson, before they move into another lesson. They own their education and appreciate it more. My daughter is dyslexic, and she has transformed from an "I can't read" identity to an "I can read, give me the time to sound out this word" identity. Homeschooling has for-ever changed her identity, if left in public school, she could not become the person that God intends for her to become. As you can tell, I am very passionate about the education,of not only my children, but all children. The children of our future deserve a better life than the one our society is giving them! It is our responsibility to prepare our children to function as an adult, and I am so glad that we, as a family have the opportunity to do so. Finally, I am so grateful for all of the individuals who have paved the way for us to make a real difference for the next generation. As you can see, I love the whole experience and will cherish every aspect that I can.
Sorry so long,
Sharon

Another favorite moment of mine is when we are taking a walk/hike and they see some type of flower or tree and can tell you about it or ask you a question and you can do a whole study thru one simple question.
You can learn thru so many simple things in life.

Hi . Another Time I Really Appreciated Homeschooling Came When I Was Watching The News Last Week . There Was A Story About A Boy Who Brought A Box Cutter To School And Threatened Other Children . My Heart Went Out To The Children . I Realized How Thankful And Fully Blessed That I And All Homeschooling Moms Have To Protect And Shelter Our Children From Some Of The Violence And Unpleasentness That Can Occur In Other Situations. I Held My Children That Night And Thanked God That I Am Able To Love And Mold Them .

A favorite homeschooling moment in the Connelly home was one day we took a 'field trip' to the bank. We finished school early before lunch and loaded all 7 up in the big van and headed out. We arrived at the bank and headed inside. The oldest son held the bank door for a customer exiting - then all proceeded to enter the bank, in a long straight line. The lady that exited the bank stood and watched with a big smile on her face. When it came time for me to enter - last in line - she looked in my eyes and proclaimed, "What a beautiful day for a parade!" Life is beautiful and having my children home makes everyday a wonderful adventure!:biggrin2:

My oldest daughter was in first grade. Her grandmother (not a homeschooling supporter:confused2 ) called and I heard my daughter tell her, "Oh, we didn't do school today." I smiled from ear to ear :biggrin2: and my heart skipped a beat. When I documented our day, it took two pages. Not only had we done school that day, we had done two days worth of work in one:idea: And she didn't even realize she'd "done school". That was confirmation to me that we were on the right track...that we were implementing a learning lifestyle, incorporating "school" into life in such as way that the two were indistinguishable! I think back on that one moment more than any other!

I also am the Mother of 3 have had my share of moments with Public schools.:rolleyes2 Taught all 3 childrn to read and math well before they started public school. Home schooling was not an option for me at the time. They are now grown and I homeschooled my grandson in the same style before he went to 1st grade this year. Now I am homeschooling my 4 yr old granddaughter who had a speech problem that the district would do nothing about because she QUOTE: had no other delays and was ahead of her peers. Last May I started working with her daily on speech so she could learn to read. She hated repeating herself to adults or children for that matter. Her behavor was deteriating with major meltdowns. This was one of the hardest things I have ever tried. No easy way to make it fun and keep a then 3 1/2 yr old focused on the task at hand. But but 3 1/2 months with 2-3 hrs a day she only had trouble with the letter R and some blends. The day she looked at me so proud because no one made fun of her speech any more and said Gramma you are the best Gram , and mostly the best Teacher in the whole wide World I Love you so much. With a huge grin on her face:biggrin2: She said Now that I can say the letters properly will you teach me to read? I was so humbled by her words. You must understand this child is a strong willed bossy child with a smile a yard wide. Likes to be correct almost a fetish in fact will find her own mistakes put a check on them herself and fix them.
Gone is the meltdowns from being asked to repeat herself she worked so very hard slowed her speech patterns does well with phonics and since Sept has learned to read Dick and Jane books write her ABC's and loves comming to her private school as she calls it. Children have a way of making us stay young, making us see the world through thier eyes and bringing us sometimes to our knee's thankfull that we are lucky enough to have them!
Hugs to all who homeschool

I have homeschooled @ thirteen years and having a large family , I depend on self learning in several subjects to help my day flow once they can read.
My favorite moment was when my child finally learned to read after a slow, slow start. She thought she was quite smart when she became a self learner and told me, "You haven't taught me a thing. All I know I learned from a library book." To this I replied, "Who taught you to read?"
