----- SC - Robert Smalls - Free Chautauqua discussion
By Gvlchautauqua

Join an audience that loves talking back to History – because it’s not just history – it’s personal. Robert Smalls was a South Carolina slave who stole a Confederate gun-boat “The Planter” and delivered it to the Union blockade for “Uncle Abe.” He became a US Navy captain fighting in 17 battles and a five-term US Congressman. This is a South Carolina story that inspires, and makes us take a look at our history in human terms.

AV Huff, PhD is a distinguished author, award-wining teacher, and beloved OLLI Teacher, AV's classes seldom have an empty seat. He is Professor of History Emeritus and Retired VP of Academic Affairs and Dean, Furman University. Dr. Huff is passionate about southern history and is author of Greenville: The History of the City and County in the South Carolina Piedmont.
