Popular Music of the Civil War
~ a common language~
Let this live performance take you back to a turbulent time in our past. The Civil War was raging and Americans were at battle with one another. Yet some things were shared. Music was a common language. Join us for a concert on Saturday, June 7, 6-7:30 p.m. in the ballroom at Rose Hill Plantation and hear some of the popular Confederate and Union tunes from the 1860s.

Dr. Brennan Szafron, organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, is returning a second year for a special musical performance. We will hear and discuss songs that served as a backdrop to the Civil War. Patriotic songs that inspired soldiers fighting for their cause, while other songs gave strength to their family member left at home to ponder their fate. There were also songs such as Home! Sweet Home! that were played by both sides. Music not only kept spirits high during these dark times, it also served as a bridge, a common language in a world torn apart.

The program includes a 15-minute intermission with light refreshments served. At the end of the performance there will be a brief period for questions and discussion.

Registration is required. Seating is limited to the first 35 registrants. Call, visit or email by Thursday, June 5, to reserve. Prices: $7/person (age 16 and older) and $5/student (age 6-15). Free with S.C. Park Passport Plus.
