Taking place 01 Feb 2013 (Single Day Event)

Historic Columbia Foundation is pleased to announce Civil Rights Movement in the Midlands from 10:00-11:00am on February 1. The Civil Rights movement in Columbia and the surrounding area started long before Martin Luther King Jr. began his journey. The Midlands was home to many civil rights leaders who made an impact at a local, state, and national level during the mid-20th century. They worked to challenge the system of segregation and defeat Jim Crow laws. The program will take place at the Modjeska Simkins House, home to one of South Carolina’s best known Civil Rights leaders. We will learn about her work on the Briggs v. Elliott case; which later combined with others to become Brown v. Board of Education. Hands-on activities and games will teach students about several individuals and events that made an impact on civil rights in this state. Participants should meet at the Modjeska Simkins House at 2025 Marion Street. The program is designed for students 8-15 years old, and costs $5 per child.
