Explore the legacy of David Drake, Potter and Poet of Edgefield District - legally enslaved, illegally literate, living, and creating in 19th century South Carolina.

Connect history, art, and literature to this great array of activities centered around a critical period in South Carolina's history. Events include:
  • Interactive African drums and dancing
  • Readings of the Caldecott-nominated children's' book Dave the Potter, Artist, Poet, Slave
  • Pottery wheel demonstrations by ceramic artist
  • Display of stages of pottery from bulk clay to finished product
  • Create a hands-on studio art project making illustrations inspired by the children's book
David Drake was a slave, who despite being bought and sold several times, always remained in Edgefield, South Carolina because that's where the clay was that he used to make pottery. His work is unique since he was literate (illegal for slaves) and he signed his work.

Homeschool groups can schedule tours of the ongoing exhibition to learn more.
