We're going to Colonial Williamsburg for our annual family camping trip.  We're staying at Chippokes Plantation State Park, which is located across the James River from Williamsburg.  Other than the obvious Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Battlefield, is there anything any of you would recommend we add to our visit while we're there?  I was there 20+ years ago when I was in the high school band, but don't really remember much from the trip (other than being sick on the tour bus  :( ).

Hello Beth,

Norfolk, VA was part of the underground railroad.  There is tour info here:  http://www.visitnorf...ays-to-freedom/

Also, a favorite stop for us when we travel are the children's museums.  I'm not sure how old your kids are, but for kids not in there teens it is a great hands on learning experience. Many of the exhibits are focused for younger learners, so older ones may not enjoy them as much. http://www.childrensmuseumva.com/  There may be an option closer to where you'll be staying.

Of course there is always civil war battlefields most places on the east coast as well.  http://www.visithamp...cover/civilwar/

We visited Jamestown and the children's museum last we were there and have plans to visit Colonial Williamsburg next time we visit family in the area.  Now I have a few more ideas for our trips as well.  :)
