PSAT

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am a new homeschool mom (10th grade) and I would like to know how to go about registering my son for the PSAT. I withdrew him from public school this week and he's not able to take it there as previously thought. I am Rock Hill SC.

Also

How do I track his time and school activities - I guess the question is what should be included? We are using Abeka and he has to watch the online lessons and do homework etc. Do I need to record all activities somewhere else? Have no clue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, are you registering for the PSAT as practice for the SAT? Or do you think your son may qualify for a National Merit Scholarship?

If neither of the above apply, I'd recommend beginning to prepare for the SAT or ACT instead (by working through one of the prep books and taking practice exams). You can begin that now, or wait until summer/fall of his junior year (and take the SAT or ACT in the spring of the junior year so he'll have time to re-take it, if needed).

If you definitely want your son to take the PSAT, you'll need to sign up for it at a local high school (private or public) and take it there. Here's more info: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html

To find out more about record-keeping, and what's required by law, visit http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/afaq7.html  (the actual text of Option 3 law is here: http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/alegal.html).

Your homeschool association should also be able to help you and answer questions regarding their specific requirements (if they differ from what's required by law).

Warmly,

Dianna

Thanks so much Diana for the response. The PSAT is preparation for the SAT but might skip it and get him started for the SAT itself.

Will read the info on the links provided.

Much appreciated.

I recommend skipping the PSAT unless a student needs it to qualify for a scholarship or special program. It's easier to register for the SAT or ACT (online), and there are multiple test centers and dates to choose from. (I prefer college test centers because students from numerous high schools are taking the test and homeschool students don't feel as if everyone else knows each other.)

I forgot to link my high school FAQs to my message above: http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/afaq8.html

Warmly,
Dianna

Thanks a lot. I've ordered an e-version of your book and learning a lot as a newbie.

You're welcome. There are a few sections of my book that deal with high school, so I think that'll help you a lot, but let me know if you have a question that's not answered there.

Warmly,

Dianna

My kids have taken the PSAT through our local high school without any problems.  If you think your dc wll qualify for National Merit it can certainly be worth it to take the PSAT.
