2007 Scholarships, Awards, and Achievements

Grace Homeschool Association announces Palmetto Fellows scholarship recipients for the 2007 year: Malcolm S Boyd, Timothy A Golob, Jenny A Labadorf, Lauren A Metz, Lauren M Poleynard, Robert D Sellers, Bethany A Stoddard, Koryn N Van Dyke, Aliece K Wilson. This year's valedictorian is Timothy Golob, and the salutatorian is Ashleigh Carver.

REACH the TOP Homeschool Association is pleased to announce their graduating class of 2007: Joey Brazell, Alex Hartman, Edward Hartman, Kenneth Havens, John Pulliam, David Shealy.

Ashley Frahn, of Palmetto Homeschool Association, is beginning her second year at Capilano College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Operating her own small business to afford rent and college, she still has been able to ace all of her classes so far. She is majoring in marine archeology and was asked to join a summer dig in which only 3rd and 4th year college students are usually accepted. She had a great time biking 11 kilometers each day to the early 1800s Japanese logging camp nestled in the mountains above Vancouver and made three significant finds. Due to her success, the department head put her in charge of all the PR for the site; giving interviews and leading tours on non-dig days. At the end of the dig she was invited to join the Greater Vancouver Archeological Society -- quite an honor for a beginner. Her sister, Hanna Frahn, recently moved to Vancouver and is working as a nanny for a local family until she starts school in January. She plans on working toward an associates degree in textiles and design. Meanwhile, her job keeps her busy and traveling (the children's mother is a movie producer who travels extensively).

Mackenzie Shealy, a tenth-grade student in Grace Homeschool Association, is one of five students in South Carolina selected to receive a 2007 Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur Award. Mackenzie was selected as an award winner in recognition of his keen entrepreneurial spirit in founding his own quail business. A registered quail breeder with the SC Department of Natural Resources, Mackenzie raises brooder Bob White Quail, gathering the eggs, hatching them and selling live quail for hunting, release, or consumption to the general public. He began his business about three years ago, has developed repeat customers and is in the process of expanding his capacity.

Kenneth Havens, of REACH the TOP Homeschool Association, is an honor student who earned his Eagle Rank, is a Junior Assistant Scout Leader, and received the "Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award" from the National Philanthropy Association. He is a National Scholar and has earned community service awards from the Diabetes Foundation and Cancer Foundation.  He was the 2007 South Carolina State Fair essay winner and received a $2000 scholarship. Kenneth has received a Scholarship from Erskine College and will attend Erskine in the fall to pursue his major in Biomedical Science.

Lawren Owens, graduate of Palmetto Homeschool Association, has received a Life Scholarship and will be majoring in business with a criminal justice minor at Bob Jones University.

REACH the Top Homeschool Association congratulates graduates Alex Hartman for making the President's List at Midlands Technical College this year as a dual credit student with a 4.0 GPA, and Edward Hartman who has completed his first year at Midlands Technical College on the honor roll as a dual credit student.

David Shealy, a graduate of REACH the TOP Homeschool Association, was named a Coker Scholar and awarded an Honor Scholarship to Coker College. He was also awarded a Tower scholarship from Erskine, and was named a semi-finalist for the National Society of High School Scholars annual Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship. He is a member of the Rho Gamma chapter of Eta Sigma Alpha National Homeschool Honor Society.
