Join us for our next Discovery Place field trip to see the world that bugs built and explore a backyard wilderness!
When: January 7
Where: Discovery Place, Charlotte, NC
Registration Deadline: November 23
The timing of events will be provided later, but plan for a full day to include the exhibit, IMAX, classes, and free time in the museum.
Bug Lab Exhibit
Experience the immersive world of bugs and their amazing abilities that inspire human innovation! Larger-than-life bug models will guide us through hands-on activities, challenges, and explorations of four immersive chambers. We’ll get to:
- Enter the “operating theatre” of the iridescent jewel wasp and witness her turn a cockroach into a zombie.
- Join forces with the Japanese honeybees to help them defeat their greatest enemy, the giant hornet.
- See the Orchid Mantis, who hunts her prey disguised as the most beautiful flower of all, and try to beat her lightning-fast reflexes.
- Witness the incredible flight of the Dragonfly in the zoetrope, a spectacular 3D animation unlike anything on the planet.
Backyard Wilderness IMAX
Explore the unexpected wonders of nature in our own backyards! Spanning a seasonal year around a suburban home, the Backyard Wilderness IMAX displays a stunning array of unique wildlife images and behavior – all captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests, and moving along the forest floor and pond bottom, to reveal its inhabitants in rare and breathtaking intimacy.
We’ll follow a young girl and her family who live next to the woods and are blind to the real-life spectacle around them. The girl gradually discovers the intricate secrets that nature has hidden so close to her front door and we experience the joy she finds in her interactions with this new world. The film reminds us that Wi-Fi is not the only connection that matters.
Secret Life of Bugs (grades K-2)
What is a bug and why do we need them? Find out as we enter the bug world and explore amazing adaptations, mysterious metamorphosis, and lots of legs. Learn about lifecycles and the benefits of bugs as we get up close and personal with some of the Museum’s bug ambassadors.
Bugs Takeover (grades 3-5)
Explore the wonderful world of Arthropods. Observe the behaviors and adaptations that allow invertebrates to survive in their environment. Live encounters with some of Discovery Place’s infamous creepy crawlies enhance the experience.
3D Printing Elements (grades 6 and up)
A “bug” class for students in grades 6 and up isn’t available. Instead, we’ll learn about elements on the periodic table through 3D modeling and printing. Students will choose an element to design and print using Tinker CAD.
NOTE: Students younger than 5 can join us at Discovery Place, but will not be able to participate in a class. Parents will not be able to participate in the classes due to limited space. I’ll designate chaperones prior to our field trip.
Cost, Cancellations, and Refund Policy
The cost is $20 per student ages 5 and up ($21 debit/credit), and $14 per adult and children ages 2-4 ($15 debit/credit), This includes admission to the museum, entry to the Bug Lab exhibit, the Backyard Wilderness IMAX, 1 class per student (class depends on age), and tax.
Parking is an additional $12 per vehicle if you park in the museum’s parking deck (payable to Discovery Place when you exit the garage). Children under age 2 are free. (Proof of age will be required.)
Lunch is not provided, so plan to eat at the museum’s cafe (organic foods), bring your own food and drinks (I’ve reserved space in their lunch room), or there are plenty of restaurants within a block of the museum.
The museum does not give refunds for cancellations or no-shows. Your submitted registration form and payment acknowledges your understanding and agreement with my no-refund policy for this event.
